Another tourney, another chance for some smith morra games. While I havent been studing my tactics much over the last 2 weeks, I have been doing some study of the smith morra ....

Update: tournament came and went, 3 games with white and no sicilians at all! Whats up, are people scared to play against the smith morra now??! :)

Upcoming tourney

Theres a 5 round open swiss on this weekend, so there could well be some smith morra action happening ;)

Drawn

My higher rated opponent walks into a prepared line and is on the ropes after just 18 moves .. just one more punch will knock him out .. I take a giant swing at him and miss!

[Event "Club Tournament B Grade"]
[Date "2005.08.08"]
[Round "1"]
[White "Smith Morra fanatic"]
[Black "NN"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]

1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Nxc3 Nc6 5. Nf3 g6 6. Bc4 Bg7

7. e5! The trap is set ;)
7. ... Nxe5? Black takes the bait!

8. Nxe5 Bxe5 9. Bxf7+ Kxf7 10. Qd5+ e6?

Black has to play Kg7 and Nf6, even so he is not happy ..
but 10. ... e6 leaves huge black square weaknesses

11. Qxe5 Qf6 12. Qg3 d5?

Black weakens his black squares more, and weakens his 2nd rank as well .. black is in big trouble

13. Bg5 Qg7 14. Nb5!? Qxb2?

White just has to find the right moves and black will be squashed

15. Qc7+ Kf8 16. Qd8+ Kg7 17. Qc7+ Kf8 18. Be7+ ??

[censored swear words] .. a horrible move by white

18. ... Nxe7 19. Qd8+ Kg7 20. Qxe7+ Kh6

White has to force a draw by repetition or lose a knight for nothing

21. Qh4+ Kg7 22. Qe7+
1/2-1/2

A dissapointing result, I had a winning position at move 18 but threw it away... the correct move was 18. Rc1! and black will lose large amounts of material when the rook arrives on c7.

Lost :(

My first loss with the Smith Morra this year :( And it was a tragic one: just one day after playing six three hour games over the weekend (without losing any), I was playing an interclub game where my opponent declined the Smith Morra with 3. ... d6. Sometime during the middle game I picked up a piece and somehow put it on the square next to the one it was meant to go to ... it was now en prise and got eaten. Game over. I have quite often intentionally put a piece on a square that turned out to be wrong, but to unintentionally put a piece on the wrong square is a new trick (that I will not be repeating soon)...

No sicilians here?

After 4 rounds of this current tournament, I've only had to face the sicilian once. SO theres not much Smith Morra action going on to talk about. However, I do have a 6 round weekend tourny coming up soon, which should provide some opportunities for playing the Morra
